Message from the Principal
Being an eighth grade honors student in Bay County trying to decide where you will attend high school has become a very exciting and possibly confusing time in your life. Recruitment letters, special meetings and application deadlines all add up to the type of pressure one usually doesn’t encounter until the senior year in high school. Is all this necessary? Do you really have to commit yourself now? Only you can answer this question. Each high school that has contacted you has an excellent academic program. For the next few minutes think about both your short term and long term goals in life. Which program best fits your needs? What type of high school experiences are you looking for? How will you develop your athletic and artistic talents while being committed to a rigorous academic program? What does it take to get into the best colleges and universities?
Let us pose one more question: “What if you could design your perfect high school?” As you work your way through the recruitment process with your parents and friends, keep this last question in mind. We are not sure we can claim perfection at Mosley just yet, but we do have a long history of academic excellence. Ingenuity and accepting new challenges have been Mosley trademarks since our school’s founding. One of our innovations has been the restructuring of our Advanced Placement Program along the lines of the best college preparatory academies in the country.
As you learn about us, you will see how we have started to define the perfect high school. We believe a college preparatory curriculum should have structure and coherence while allowing maximum flexibility and individual choice. The Mosley Advanced Placement Program for Success seeks to develop the total person by providing both an internationally accepted standard of academic excellence and a nurturing atmosphere.
Mosley will provide you with a high school experience you will remember throughout your life. We are committed to turning out students who will live effective and purposeful lives. You and your parents are invited to visit MAPPS at Mosley. As you prepare to make a decision which will shape the next four years of your life, let us show you and your parents the advantages Mosley has to offer. Please plan to attend an introductory MAPPS meeting at Mosley in January. A MAPPS Open House will be held at Mosley in February. Student-led tours of the campus will be given during this meeting. History
Located on the A. Crawford Mosley High School campus in Lynn Haven, Florida, the Mosley Advanced Placement Program for Success (MAPPS) is a college preparatory program for students in ninth through twelfth grade.A. Crawford Mosley High School has a well-established reputation for academic excellence. Seeking to provide our students with the best possible preparation for college, Mosley has continuously upgraded its honors program since the school's opening in 1973. In 1983, Mosley began its highly successful relationship with the prestigious and internationally recognized Advanced Placement Program. Mosley has also developed a close relationship with neighboring Gulf Coast Community College through the Dual-Enrollment Program. In 1995, Mosley established a math/science magnet program on campus known as MACSM for students interested in pursuing careers in engineering, bio-medical fields, and computers. These students are provided both a specially designed curriculum and a support network of teachers, parents, counselors, and community professionals to ensure the best possible preparation for such demanding professions.
The overwhelming response by students and parents to MACSM prompted Mosley to redesign our college preparatory program along similar lines. By establishing the Mosley Advanced Placement Program for Success (MAPPS), we provide a nurturing environment for our college-bound students. Flexible curriculum choices allow students to develop personal strengths while also meeting state scholarship as well as diploma requirements. Over the past decade, research has shown that college students who participated in the Advanced Placement Program in high school outperform their peers in college. Because Mosley has been the leader among district high schools in AP examination results since the introduction of the program into Bay County in the early 1980's, MAPPS is founded on a strong record of academic performance.
Furthermore, MAPPS believes that a student's future success should not be strictly defined by such commendable academic success. The college preparatory program at Mosley provides an environment which seeks to develop the total person; therefore, MAPPS promotes student involvement in the performing arts, athletics, and voluntary service to the community. Our guidance counselors, faculty advisors, and program coordinators encourage student participation in a wide variety of activities that prepare students not just for college, but for life.
Since 1975, Mosley has sent forth its graduates to embrace their future. As our college preparatory program alumni continue their education at many of the finest colleges and universities, one constant theme emerges when they return to their alma mater,
"Thank you for preparing us so well!"
